A short, intense, and incredibly fun adventure swept me off my feet like a whirlwind across Mexican lands – Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and Chichen Itza. Eager to see it all in just 10 days and experiment, there was no time for sleep. I fell in love with the energy of Playa del Carmen. My fiery Latino-Balkan nature was magnetically drawn to the music pouring out of every single one of the hundreds of venues along the pedestrian seaside street, "5th Avenue." I wanted to dance like crazy until dawn.
I had traveled with a small group of friends who didn’t share the same party mindset, so I grabbed a local friend of ours by the ear and dragged him along with me to the venues. I danced my way from the very first spot on the nearly 5-kilometer street to its farthest end, where the nightclubs of El Chapo – the gangster world – were located! It felt like stepping into a Colombian barrio. There was police with automatic weapons every few meters and countless tourists, making it hard to weave my way through! But I danced, and everyone smiled at me, even the serious-looking officers! People are often afraid of that part of the street, but I felt right at home. I’ll definitely be back again!
